A Currently Untitled Community Conjuration
A new combined mode of working has recently emerged for me, and my practice is coalescing around it: I’m creating works that transport people to a spiritual realm through collective experiences. Using wine glasses, water, and vocalizations, with participants discovering accidental harmonies while holding productive dissonance. With these vocalizations, the sculptural works are activated and “combination tones” appear – sounds that seem to emerge from elsewhere. These works provoke a range of emotion, from elation and catharsis to what one participant called “mass hysteria”.
The conjuring of more voices than there really are opens a different dimension of experience. Offering a way to access spaces that may not officially exist is a small but revolutionary gesture, and has become the focus of my research.
